The star of opera "Dark Shadows died at 87. Reports said that Jonathan Fri died last Friday . Jonathan Frid was a Canadian actor and he's best known for playing Barnabas Collins a 1960's supernatural soap opera "Dark Shadows".

Jonathan Frid was a Yale graduate, a theater actor looking for a teaching job until he was hired to play a 200-year-old vampire on “Dark Shadows,” At its peak, the show was watched by 20 million viewers, according to TV Guide. 

After “Dark Shadows” ended in 1971, Frid returned to stage acting and also appeared at “Dark Shadows” conventions. He also starred in the films “House of Dark Shadows,” “The Devil’s Daughter” and Oliver Stone’s ”Seizure,” according to his bio website.

Jonathan Frid served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and later returned to McMaster University, where he headed the drama society, graduating in 1948.  

In January 1949, Frid was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England. He subsequently found work with British repertory companies and appeared in a touring production of a West End thriller The Third Visitor. Two years later, Frid returned to Canada where he continued working in repertory companies, including the Earl Grey Players in Toronto, where at the same time he also studied at Lorne Greene's Academy of Radio Arts.
